I'm in the process of breaking out from under my dad's somewhat overcontrolling thumb, and the first part of this is replacing his car (the murdersofa) with a car that I have total control over. This involves getting insurance. I'm 19. ha ha. ha ha haaaaaa.

Shit's expensive, yo.

So far the cheapest I've been able to find is Progressive, which is around $750 a year and doesn't include insurance against Acts of God, somewhat common (hail, tornadoes, houses falling on witches, floods) in Kansas, and considering I'm already trying to fix hail damage on my car I'd really rather not have to do this bullshit again.

Fortunately my mother is sympathetic to my cause (though unable to help financially, which is fine by me) and directed me to an insurance agent that would get quotes from all major and some local insurance providers and give me the cheapest/best (not the same ting) options. Yay!

Also my boss has promised me more hours! Double yay!

Now I need to find tail lights and possibly injectors for a 98 Civic sedan. From what I can see a set of tail light lenses is about $70 at the cheapest on ebay. Ugh. And a set of injectors is $110. At these rates I might just get some fucking trailer lights and used injectors from a salvage yard.

Ha, haha.

Well that blows. Although my sympathy runs out here, because insurance would be at least $3500 a year for me.

750 for a 19 year old doesn't sound terrible. That's about what I'm paying for minimal coverage on my MR2, and I'm 28.

Seriously, I pay like $250 a month for the FiST.

$750 = NP!

when I was 19 I was paying $2k/yr for a ten-year old Saturn, and that's with no tickets or accidents.

$62 a month doesn't warrant complaining.

$750 per year is nothing. I'm going to be paying $220 a MONTH for my Cutlass.

For that Civic?

Liability only IMO. C&C isn't worth it.

Yes, insurance is obscenely expensive. I'm paying over $4000/year for insurance.

In my defense, it's on three automobiles, a motorcycle, and a house.

I was happy when I got under $200/mo. I'm 5 years older than you and have a perfect driving record. Fuck you.

I pay $1300 every 6 months! $750 is a drop in the bucket, let's switch.

Good luck. FWIW, get an online quote from Geico. I have used them for about 10 yrs now, have been unable to find anyone cheaper for what I want, and they have been great the 2 times I've had a claim. Just another option.

THIS! Unless you are prone to accidents or something, C&C isn't worth your time. In fact most insurance companies don't recommend C&C for cars that you own outright (Depending on the car you own..)

$750 a year isn't that bad for minimum coverage at your age.

I've just hit $1,000 every six months and I have the sads, though that's for two vehicles, full coverage, and in an expensive state. If I didn't have USAA, I don't want to even think about what it would be.

I'm on my parents' insurance plan and they tell me I'm at $1,000 a year.
Not being on the plan (while I'm in college since I don't have a car), we found the money to get my college laptop and another camera lens. O_O

Deadass = NYC slang for dead serious/seriously.

I drive a 2014 C300., but I would kill to pay $62 a month like our dear friend here. That leaves much more money for activities.

+1 on Geico they've been great for me and gave me the cheapest quote. Progressive and All State were both about $1000 more per year.

I sure would be nice to have an extra $190 of beer money. Luckily I'm young and my rates should go down in the next few years which will free up a little bit of cash for when I move back to the States.

I'm also in Germany where insurance just costs more so there is nothing I can do about that.

A few things. First up, don't bother with a broker. There are websites for that. Before you use them, check for cashback deals - 15% or so back on your premium isn't to be sniffed at. Check whether fully-comp or third-party is cheaper: often it's actually fully-comp just because those drivers tend to be more careful of their property.

Do you already have the car? If so, you have less flexibility. Otherwise, a great way to get cheap insurance is to buy a modern classic car of some kind.

Yeah I turn 25 this month so hopefully that'll bring my rates down for May when my next 6 month payment is due. I'm also taking an online defensive driving course this month to try to get my rates lowered a bit. This is with a clean driving record!

That was a first gen Mazda3 hatch. Nothing special, really. The problem is living in Ontario, Canada, our insurance costs are ridiculous. I know few people who are under $100/mo before they turn 25 (soon...).
